woo hooo... we have 2... any more people that want to enjoy life rather than just spending it preparing to regret in your later days?

Thing is, I don't want to spend £60-70 on something that isn't mine and that I don't get to use when I want.
So is I paid in, we go out and use it once - then what? Who looks after it (and do they use it whenever?). Do we have to wait for another day to be organised before I'm able to use what would be partly mine?
Sorry man, not feeling this idea.

my sentiments entirely...
i don't feel like shelling £70 which i don't have on something we (and by that, i mean 'i') will use once in a blue moon.
plus, i don't really like karting...

See, now that is a more reasonable explination of why someone doesn't want in...
Logistics eh... ok...
I can't see there being a problem with anyone using it whenever they want - just collect it from an agreed location and take it to where you are going to use it.
Who looks after it? If you mean, where will it live, then we either take turns in housing it or agree on a home where people can collect it from etc (if possible and i'm sure nobody would make this too awkward - i would offer a home for it that people could collect it from and use it even if i wasn't playing that day!) If you mean maintainence - we all do, if you break something, you get it fixed. General upkeep would be low anyway.
But what if you break it for good? Well, i'm sure everyone is reasonable enough that we can agree on something for this before hand? i.e. I am willing to take that risk!
The truth is, Tom has come up with the best reasons so far for not wanting in and i admire him for it. It shows that he at least took the time to think about the idea. Well done Tom!!
Now i know that there are logistics involved in something like this and this thread doesn't answer everything but that would be needed to be finalised before a bizzare but fun idea like this went ahead.
I realise that nobody is as fun loving as myself and wont just take chances like this (hey, i'm a gambler!) so this is likely never to happen but i can hold my head up high and say, at least i tried to make life fun!

mate, it doesn't mean to say we're not fun loving...i'm as fun loving as the next guy. but you don't have to shell out a minmum of £70 to have this kind of fun. (that's not including safety gear) i just guess that not everyone's into karting as much as you. yeah, we all like to go every once in a while...and that's we have have karting trips. but you can only do it one at a time if we got this vehicle anyway.
plus there's limited places where you can actually use it, and how are we going to transport it to the fields? it needs to be taxed and insured and licensed to drive on the road. also if we use the same field all the time, then the enjoyment will wear out rapidly.
but yeah well done to tom. i was thinking along the same lines but didn't know how to word it...seriously

I cannot say how disappointed I am with you all.
The mundane, the boring, the uninspired ideas get a yes, lets do that response and this fun idea has been rejected with lame excuses of a lack of money etc. |
First of all, I really do not think anyone has taken you seriously on this Chris - I know I didn't at first. I think now that you have come out and stated this as a real and well-thought out idea, you will get your responses just like Tom's, Dave's and Greg's above.
They give good reasons too. But I can't see how lack of money isn't a good enough reason in the first place - you have to look at what you are doing through our eyes here. £70 is a lot of money if that is your weekly wage and I know I would have to think long and hard about it especially as Im going on holiday later this year. Maybe I feel like Im speaking for the low wage/uni people here but such an investment is something which will needs some real thought. As the 'Go Ape' issue has shown, TTFE has shifted so significantly to full time working people over the last year or so, I guess the society's centre has changed too. This is not a regret or a moan about TTFE - its merely an observation of how things have changed.
That said, why is it that all the other stuff we do is suddenly 'mundane'? Why has this idea instantly given the title of being 'fun'? Maybe some people wouldn't find watching someone else ride a go kart thing in the mud much fun at all!
I am afraid to say I am not up for this idea. As much as I love to big up any idea which can revolutionise this fine society and take it to new places, I can find no real personal satisfaction in this idea and I'm afraid I am not comfortable in providing the cash even if it would have a positive effect on the society.

I love it, i am finally getting people actually thinking about an idea... i don't care that it's a no - i am just glad that it's not being dismissed and poo-pooed without fair consideration!
Now, i know this is a lost battle already however i would like to answer some of the questions:
No, this would not be taxed/insured/licenced as it would only be driven off road on private land (we would use a trailor to get it there and back)
Safety gear - helmet £30, and this could be shared - i.e. buy a small, med and large and split that too! Nowt else needed than a helmet.
Boring field? Change the track - you don't have to go around in circles!
Boring watching someone else? Eat your bbq burger and wait for your next go at posting your time on the newly set track, come on, who doens't want to be the fastest lap or top of the points table with a green up arrow on a Karting Stats Thread!?!
Eventually, we could have got a 2nd and had 1 on 1 races (if it was successful)
This doesn't mean that everything else is mundane, but let's be honest here - this is a wacky idea and it would have been a little out there
£70 is not pocket money to me either, but having considered the romance of this idea (in my imagination of it) i thought it was a better spend than a couple of karting trips or a few nights out. A lot of people are willing to spend £20-30 on a night out - but don't even think about idea's like this! (and how many chances do we get do do something trully silly yet fun?)
Now i may be a little out there myself with this idea, i aknowledge that, but what is TTFE if it isn't passion? Now, really, imagine the day and how much fun you could have and although we are all pretty sure by now that this idea is never going to come to fruition - tell me, can you argue with my logic and defence of this idea?
Let's face it, it's the best idea any of us have come out with in a while? God Damn it i'm good! *slaps belly*
--EDIT--
p.s. look at the people finding money for "Go Ape" and "ComedyMania" and "Poolmania" and "TTFE pub golf" and other "drinking nights out" - shows that money is only an influence when people aren't really interested in the idea it's self - all i say to that is, seriously consider every suggestions before it's too late

I would like to do this idea and money was an issue for the amount of times I would actually use, because with everything I would use it a few times and get bored and wouldn't bother anymore. I will spend money on the other mentioned activities as they are usually one offs and as I am a lazy person at the best of times I just wouldn't use it as often as I could.
Good Idea though but not for me at this present time, maybe when I become less lazy I guess!

so what you're telling me, is that you had more than £300 before, and used it to buy a ps3 and games... you do realise you can just say "I don't want to do this" don't you?
Like Paul when he doesn't want to do something, or Riv (great example)... they both say No thanks I'm not interested or No thanks, I don't want to socialise with you!

this is something which doesnt interest me anyway, would get more use out of a ps3 so hence why i bought one
I did state last time that I wouldn't get the use out of this and would be a waste of money so I put it towards something which I would use
